Trump-linked accounts bought back MSTR shares as the stock rebounded

Federal ethics filings show Trump‑beneficiary accounts sold Strategy (MSTR) shares in early July, then repurchased them later in the month as the price rose roughly 80% within two months.

Federal Office of Government Ethics (OGE) filings reveal that investment accounts named for former President Donald Trump sold and then repurchased shares of Strategy (Nasdaq: MSTR) during July 2026. The timing of the trades coincided with a sharp rebound in MSTR’s stock price.

Sequence of trades

The periodic transaction report filed on September 22 lists three MSTR Class A transactions:

  • July 8: sale of shares valued between $1,001 and $15,000.
  • July 24: purchase of shares in the same $1,001‑$15,000 range.
  • July 27: larger purchase valued between $50,001 and $100,000.

Earlier filings also show two sales on June 23‑24 totaling $16,002‑$65,000. No MSTR purchases were reported in June.

Stock performance

MSTR closed at $91.67 on July 24, the day of the first reported repurchase. By September 22 the share price had risen to $167.33, an increase of roughly 80% in less than two months. The July 27 purchase occurred when the stock closed at $98.65, a gain of about 70% from that day’s price.

Relation to Bitcoin holdings

Strategy is the world’s largest publicly traded corporate holder of bitcoin, reporting 846,000 BTC on September 21, valued at about $63.8 billion. The company’s equity is highly sensitive to bitcoin price movements; during the period in question bitcoin recovered toward the mid‑$80,000 range, supporting the stock’s rebound.

Limitations of the disclosures

The OGE forms report transaction values in ranges, not exact amounts, share counts, or execution prices. They also capture only trades above $1,000, so the total exposure to MSTR in the accounts is unknown. The filings list 1,156 July trades across all securities, estimated to total $79 million‑$270 million, with MSTR representing a small portion.

Who directed the trades?

The reports name Trump as the beneficiary but do not indicate whether he personally made the investment decisions. The White House and Trump Organization state that outside financial managers control the accounts without input from Trump or his family.

Political scrutiny

Democratic lawmakers have questioned the volume of trades reported in Trump‑linked accounts, citing thousands of transactions in 2025‑2026 and requesting details about the external managers. No findings have been issued regarding wrongdoing in the MSTR trades.
