Veteran Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr exits OCEAN pool – Will hash power follow him to new pool?

OCEAN Mining has completed a buyout of co‑founder and long‑time Bitcoin Core developer Luke Dashjr, ending his ownership and three leadership positions at the mining pool. In an August 29 joint statement, OCEAN said it repurchased all of Dashjr’s equity and that he resigned as chairman, chief technology officer and director.

Dashjr’s next step: CONVOY

Following the separation, Dashjr announced plans for a new mining venture named CONVOY. At the time of reporting, CONVOY had not provided any public endpoint, codebase, participating miners, infrastructure details, fee schedule or block‑template policy. No miners, staff (aside from Dashjr) or hardware were reported to have transferred from OCEAN.

OCEAN’s current hash‑rate share

Data from mempool.space on August 30 showed OCEAN attributed four of the previous 163 blocks, representing a 2.45 % share of trailing‑day blocks. This translates to an estimated 24.57 exahashes per second (EH/s). Over a trailing‑week window, OCEAN was credited with 29 of 1,007 blocks (2.88 %) and a weekly hashrate estimate of 25.33 EH/s, roughly 2.86 % of the network.

Implications for the mining landscape

The split was described as a result of differing visions after recent protocol developments, though no specific proposal (such as BIP‑110 or Bitcoin Knots) was named. OCEAN continues to operate its transparent, non‑custodial pool and maintains both BIP‑110‑compatible and non‑BIP‑110 endpoints. The emergence of a functional CONVOY pool or a measurable shift in OCEAN’s share would be the first clear indicator of miner migration.
