How Bitcoin Survives Quantum Computers (ft. Dan Boneh)

A lecture from Stanford cryptographer Dan Boneh. He explains how a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could forge the signatures used to authorize Bitcoin and Ethereum transactions, and what it would take to upgrade both networks before that happens. Boneh explores why blockchains may turn to signatures built from hash functions. Some require wallets to carefully track how often a signing key has been used. If two devices fall out of sync and reuse the same key, the wallet’s security can fail. Other designs avoid that risk but produce much larger signatures and can require as many as a billion hash…
