39 State Banking Groups Form BankChain Alliance for 2027 Blockchain Launch

The industry-owned network is still selecting a technology partner and would support tokenized deposits, stablecoins, smart payments and automated settlement.

Thirty‑nine U.S. state banking associations have created the BankChain Alliance, a collaborative effort to develop a common blockchain network for tokenized deposits, stablecoins, smart payments and automated settlement. The alliance aims to launch the network in 2027, though it is not yet an operating payments system.

Scope and Membership

The alliance’s 39 member associations represent 3,283 banks with approximately $21.8 trillion in assets, according to FDIC call‑report data as of March 31. The participating associations span states from Alabama to Wyoming, covering a broad geographic and institutional mix.

Governance and Ownership Model

BankChain is described as industry‑owned, designed and governed by its members. The board is chaired by Kathy Kraninger, president and CEO of the Florida Bankers Association, and includes leaders from several other state banking groups and TekFactor founder Kim Askwith. The model is intended to give community and regional banks a stake in the infrastructure, contrasting with networks controlled by large banks, core‑technology vendors, or crypto firms.

Technology Partner Selection

The alliance has completed the first phase of its request for proposals and is currently evaluating technology partners. Compliance was highlighted as a primary selection criterion. The alliance also plans to acquire an ownership stake in the chosen technology provider, though specific funding terms have not been disclosed.

Comparison with Existing Initiatives

BankChain enters a space that already includes The Clearing House’s tokenized‑deposit project, which aims to settle tokenized commercial‑bank money on‑chain and connect with RTP and CHIPS networks. The Clearing House initiative is backed by 25 of the nation’s largest banks and processes over $2 trillion daily, but it does not yet have a public launch date. BankChain’s broader product scope and governance structure differentiate it from this existing effort.

Next Steps

Before the 2027 target can be tested, BankChain must finalize its technology partner and convert association‑level sponsorship into concrete commitments from individual banks.
