Aave founder proposes an “Uber path” for DeFi as US crypto bill stalls
Aave founder Stani Kulechov sees an 'Uber path' for DeFi if U.S. crypto legislation stalls, he told The Starting Block.

Aave CEO Stani Kulechov said the decentralized finance sector may need to follow an “Uber path” to regulation – growing adoption until lawmakers can no longer ignore the need for clear rules.
Regulatory outlook after the Clarity Act vote
Kulechov made the comments at the Avalanche Summit in New York, less than 24 hours after the Senate voted 49‑50 against advancing the Clarity Act. He remains hopeful that the legislation could still be enacted later in the year, noting that many lawmakers on both sides are seeking clearer definitions, safeguards and market structures for the industry.
Driving adoption as a regulatory lever
The founder argues that higher user adoption will showcase DeFi’s benefits and make it too significant for regulators to ignore. He likens this strategy to how Uber’s rapid growth forced cities to address ride‑hailing regulations.
Expanding beyond crypto‑native assets
Aave’s next growth phase focuses on extending DeFi infrastructure to tokenized stocks, securities and other real‑world assets. At the summit, the company unveiled a real‑world asset hub on Avalanche that targets institutional lending and borrowing, allowing certain tokenized assets to be used as collateral for stablecoin loans.
Kulechov said institutional demand drives this move, emphasizing that “institutions come with size, so that’s where a lot of the demand will come.” He added that tokenization is no longer a technological barrier but a go‑to‑market challenge.
Consumer‑focused product roadmap
Aave is also developing a consumer app that abstracts wallets, networks and stablecoins, enabling users to move money between bank accounts and Aave with a simplified savings experience. Kulechov believes DeFi will eventually integrate with all finance.
