Bitcoin holders take moderate profits while exchange reserves dip, recovery still unconfirmed

Bitcoin long-term holders realize 72% profits as exchange reserves and open interest fall, but CryptoQuant says the recovery remains unconfirmed.

Bitcoin has been trading near $84,000 as long‑term holders realize moderate gains and exchange balances shrink. While on‑chain metrics show improvement, analysts caution that a full recovery has not yet been confirmed.

Profit taking by long‑term holders

CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost reported that long‑term Bitcoin holders are realizing profits of roughly 72%, far below the near‑350% peak recorded in December 2024. The metric reflects the profit performance of coins spent by this cohort, not the proportion of holdings sold.

Exchange outflows and reserve decline

Between September 17 and 23, exchanges recorded a net outflow of 12,153 BTC, bringing total reserves down from about 2.726 million BTC to 2.698 million BTC – a 1.03% drop. A single day, September 22, accounted for 19,105 BTC of withdrawals, indicating that outflows were not uniform across the week.

Binance saw its own net outflow rise to over 13,800 BTC, the largest daily figure since 2023, reducing its reserves from roughly 705,000 BTC to 685,000 BTC over four days.

Derivatives market eases

Open interest fell 10.4% from $29.34 billion on September 21 to $26.29 billion on September 24, partly reflecting Bitcoin’s price pullback. Funding rates also cooled, dropping to 0.00570% on September 24 after earlier readings above 0.006%.

Spot demand remains uncertain

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net inflow of $191 million on September 24, extending a six‑day streak of positive flows. BlackRock’s IBIT attracted about $163 million, while Fidelity’s FBTC added $12.86 million. Despite these inflows, analysts note that ETF subscriptions represent only a portion of total spot activity.

Outlook

Analysts view the current environment as cautiously constructive but stress that a confirmed recovery will require sustained spot buying and clearer exchange flow patterns. Upcoming options expiries, including roughly $18.1 billion in BTC and ETH contracts, could add further volatility.
