Block Adds Bitcoin Lightning Support to x402 Open Payment Standard for AI Agents

Block announced that it has integrated Bitcoin Lightning Network payments into the x402 open payment standard, a protocol designed for autonomous AI agents to pay for APIs, data and digital services.

What is x402?

x402 is an open payment standard launched in April under the Linux Foundation. It enables AI agents and web services to conduct autonomous transactions without human intervention. The foundation behind x402 includes major tech firms such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, as well as crypto companies like Coinbase and the Solana Foundation.

Block’s Role and Lightning Integration

Block’s participation expands its involvement in the Universal Commerce Protocol, which aims to facilitate AI‑driven commerce for small businesses. According to Steve Lee, head of Block’s Bitcoin development initiative Spiral, Lightning is well‑suited for the low‑cost, high‑volume payments required by agentic commerce.
