CertiK and NBKR Sign MoU on Digital Som Security

The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic and CertiK have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering security cooperation for the Digital Som and broader digital asset oversight. The framework includes cybersecurity, formal verification, AML/CFT, operational resilience, supervision, and knowledge exchange.

The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic (NBKR) and blockchain security firm CertiK have formalised a cooperation framework aimed at strengthening the security of Kyrgyzstan’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) project, the Digital Som, and broader digital‑asset supervision.

MoU signed in Bishkek

The memorandum was signed on 9 September 2026 in Bishkek by NBKR board member Sanzhar Abdygaziev and CertiK representatives. It outlines joint activities in cybersecurity, formal verification, anti‑money‑laundering (AML) and counter‑terrorist financing (CFT), operational resilience, regulatory supervision and knowledge exchange.

Focus on Digital Som security

Key areas for the CBDC include:

  • Security assessments and formal verification of the platform’s code.
  • Implementation of cybersecurity controls and operational‑resilience measures.
  • Evaluation of software integrity, key management and transaction‑monitoring mechanisms.

Broader digital‑asset oversight

Beyond the CBDC, the parties will share expertise on:

  • Supervision of digital‑asset service providers.
  • AML/CFT practices, transaction monitoring and custody standards.
  • Technical security standards and licensing requirements.
  • Risk‑monitoring tools, including CertiK’s Supervision and Compliance solutions (exploratory stage).

Training and knowledge exchange

Both organisations plan regular training sessions and workshops to build capacity within the NBKR for secure digital‑asset infrastructure development.

Context and significance

The agreement arrives as central banks worldwide intensify efforts to launch CBDCs while confronting heightened security threats. CertiK’s own reports note billions of dollars in Web3‑related losses in recent years, underscoring the importance of robust security measures.
