Charles Hoskinson Predicts Crypto Will Eat AI Within 5‑10 Years
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson says blockchain will eventually absorb artificial intelligence, citing unsustainable data‑center growth and the need for decentralized alignment, provenance and payment solutions.
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson told the Deeptech Insights podcast that he expects blockchain technology to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) within the next five to ten years. He compared this future shift to the way cryptocurrency once absorbed cryptography as a discipline.
Why Hoskinson Sees a Turning Point for AI
Hoskinson highlighted the rapid expansion of AI data‑center spending, which he described as growing tenfold each year. He argued that the electricity grid cannot keep pace with such growth, making the current model unsustainable. He also noted that AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic will eventually need to become profitable, and the high cost of pre‑training large models narrows the path to profitability.
Blockchain as the Solution
According to Hoskinson, blockchain can address three key gaps that AI cannot solve on its own:
- Payments: Decentralized finance can provide efficient, low‑cost transaction mechanisms for AI services.
- Alignment: A blockchain‑based governance layer could establish shared standards for acceptable AI behavior, replacing the fragmented rules set by individual AI companies.
- Data provenance: Distributed ledgers can track the origin of content used by AI models and automate royalty payments to original creators.
Distributed AI Infrastructure
Hoskinson suggested that instead of building more centralized data centers, the industry could pool everyday devices—phones and GPUs—into a distributed training network. He likened the current AI build‑out to the late‑1990s fiber‑optic boom, where most newly laid cable remained idle for years before being fully utilized.
Regulatory Outlook
Hoskinson also commented on U.S. crypto regulation, predicting that the CLARITY Act would not pass Congress until 2029 due to political delays. His remark coincided with the Senate’s failure to advance the bill on September 15, 2026.
