CoinShares Says Bitcoin Won’t Break $80,000 This Year
CoinShares says a hawkish Fed and the stalled CLARITY Act keep Bitcoin under $80,000. VanEck disagrees.
CoinShares forecasts that Bitcoin (BTC) will stay below the $80,000 level for the remainder of the year, citing monetary policy and regulatory uncertainty as the main constraints.
Why CoinShares Sees a Ceiling at $80,000
James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, linked the price outlook to the Federal Reserve’s recent policy shift. The Fed raised its benchmark rate by a quarter‑point to a range of 3.75%‑4.00%, the first increase since 2023, and removed projections for easing through 2027. Butterfill argued that without better inflation data or a clear change in policy expectations, a decisive break above $80,000 is unlikely. He also noted that higher energy prices, driven by geopolitical factors, keep inflation pressures high, limiting the Fed’s incentive to cut rates.
Regulatory Context
The firm said Bitcoin’s legal status is already settled, which shields it from the stalled CLARITY Act—a U.S. bill intended to set rules for the crypto market. In contrast, Ether and other altcoins face greater regulatory risk because much of the stablecoin payment infrastructure runs on those networks.
Contrasting View from VanEck
VanEck’s head of digital assets research, Matthew Sigel, predicts Bitcoin could reach $100,000 within the next year. He attributes the bullish outlook to government debt pressures that he believes support Bitcoin’s price. VanEck treats bond‑market dynamics as a base case, whereas CoinShares views the same pressure as a tail‑risk scenario.
On‑Chain and Market Indicators
- Glassnode data showed Bitcoin closing below its True Market Mean this week, indicating the price is under the average cost paid by holders.
- The CLARITY Act failed to pass in September, with a 49‑50 Senate vote, and stablecoin issuer Circle’s stock fell 11% following the rejection.
CoinShares expects a revised version of the bill to emerge as early as next year, but until inflation eases, the firm believes the Fed’s stance will remain the primary ceiling on Bitcoin’s price.
