SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce Resigns Effective Oct 2

Hester Peirce, often called “Crypto Mom” for her outspoken support of digital assets, submitted a resignation letter on September 21 and will step down from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 2.

New Role in Academia

Peirce will begin as an associate professor at Regent University School of Law in November 2026. The university highlighted her expertise in federal litigation, securities regulation, financial markets, administrative governance, public policy, and digital assets.

Regulatory Stance

During her tenure, Peirce consistently advocated for clear, rule‑based regulation of crypto rather than a “regulation by enforcement” approach. She criticized the SEC’s enforcement actions, such as the 2023 case against Kraken’s staking program, as inefficient for an emerging industry.

Impact on the SEC

Peirce’s departure leaves the SEC with only two active commissioners—Chairman Paul S. Atkins and Commissioner Mark T. Uyeda—while two Democrat‑appointed seats remain vacant. No replacement has been announced by the White House.
