Former CFTC Commissioner Summer Mersinger to Exit Blockchain Association After Legislative Setback

Summer Mersinger, who served as a commissioner at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), announced she will leave her role as chief executive of the Blockchain Association (BA) at the end of the year.

Leadership transition

The BA said Mersinger will step down on October 16, when former chief executive Kristin Smith will return to lead the organization on an interim basis.

Background and advocacy work

Mersinger joined the BA in June 2025 after departing the CFTC three years before the scheduled end of her second term. During her tenure, she promoted the GENIUS Act (Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins) and worked toward regulatory clarity at both the Securities and Exchange Commission and the CFTC.

Legislative setback

The association’s push for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a Senate‑considered bill, stalled when a cloture motion failed to secure enough votes from Democrats and Republicans. Analysts expect the measure to remain inactive until at least 2027.
