Blockchain Association leadership shift follows defeat of Digital Asset Market Clarity Act
The trade group will be run again by its original CEO, Kristin Smith, when Summer Mersinger leaves at the end of a long congressional tussle.

Summer Mersinger, chief executive of the Blockchain Association, announced she will step down after a week marked by a major legislative loss for the crypto industry. The association will be led on an interim basis by its founding CEO, Kristin Smith, beginning October 16.
Leadership transition
Mersinger, who joined the association after serving on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, said she is proud of the policy advances achieved during her tenure, including the passage of the GENIUS Act and progress toward regulatory clarity at the SEC and CFTC. She added that Smith, who founded the organization in 2018 and led it until 15 months ago, will guide the group forward.
Legislative backdrop
The leadership change comes shortly after the U.S. Senate rejected the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a bill that sought to provide clearer regulatory guidance for digital assets. All Senate Democrats and several Republicans voted against advancing the measure, marking a significant setback for the industry.
Smith’s ongoing roles
Kristin Smith left the Blockchain Association last year to become president of the Solana Policy Institute but retained her position on the association’s board. She will continue her duties at the Solana Policy Institute while serving as interim CEO of the Blockchain Association.
