Deutsche Bank Awaits Regulatory Nod to Launch Institutional Crypto Custody Solutions

Germany’s largest bank is awaiting regulatory approval to launch institutional custody solutions for Bitcoin, Ether and select stablecoins before expanding into tokenized assets.

Deutsche Bank, Germany’s largest bank, is preparing to offer institutional crypto custody services in Europe, pending final regulatory approval. The bank aims to activate the service for its first clients later this year, contingent on the completion of the required licensing process.

Planned Asset Coverage

The initial offering will support Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH) and a selection of stablecoins, including Circle’s USDC, EURC and AllUnity EUR (EURAU). Support for tokenized financial instruments is slated for a later phase.

Regulatory Timeline

Deutsche Bank expects to receive its custody licence in October under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto‑Assets (MiCA) framework. Full MiCA enforcement began on 1 July, accelerating banks’ efforts to launch crypto services.

Industry Context

The move follows Deutsche Bank’s 2023 announcement of a partnership with Taurus to develop custody capabilities. Other German banks have already launched similar services: Landesbank Baden‑Württemberg partnered with Bitpanda in April 2024, and DZ Bank obtained BaFin authorisation for its meinKrypto platform in December 2025.

Future Outlook

Beyond custodial services, Deutsche Bank’s head of digital assets has indicated interest in entering the stablecoin market, potentially issuing its own token. The bank’s expansion into tokenized assets will further broaden its digital‑finance portfolio.
