Deutsche Bank to Offer Institutional Crypto Custody in Europe
Deutsche Bank, founded in 1870, plans to start safeguarding bitcoin, ethereum, and selected stablecoins for institutional clients later in 2026.

Deutsche Bank announced that it will launch a regulated digital‑asset custody service for institutional clients later in 2026. The service will cover bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH) and a small selection of stablecoins, allowing corporate, asset‑manager and sovereign clients to store these assets under the bank’s existing custodial framework.
Scope of the Custody Offering
The initial product menu includes:
Deutsche Bank will manage wallets, private keys and third‑party transfers, removing the need for clients to build their own technical infrastructure. The rollout will begin in Germany, targeting existing Corporate Bank and Investment Bank customers.
Regulatory and Security Framework
The service remains subject to approval under Europe’s Markets in Crypto‑Assets (MiCA) framework and requires BaFin clearance before activation. Security measures described by the bank include hardware‑backed key generation, separate warm and cold storage, multi‑person approvals, redundant systems and controlled backup and recovery procedures.
Background and Development
Deutsche Bank’s involvement with blockchain dates back to 2015. It joined the R3 consortium in 2016, added crypto custody to its agenda in 2020, partnered with Swiss digital‑asset firm Taurus in 2023, and applied for a German digital‑asset custody licence the same year. Its asset‑management arm, DWS, launched the euro‑backed token EURAU after obtaining a BaFin e‑money licence in 2025, which now appears on the planned custody list.
Industry Context
Other European banks such as Standard Chartered, BBVA and Commerzbank already provide institutional crypto custody services. Deutsche Bank’s entry marks a significant expansion of traditional banking infrastructure into the crypto space.
