Ethereum schedules Frame Transactions (EIP‑8141) for 2027 Hegotá upgrade

Ethereum developers have committed EIP‑8141, known as Frame Transactions, to the network’s 2027 Hegotá upgrade, putting native account abstraction on the path to becoming part of Ethereum’s standard transaction system.

Ethereum’s core developers have moved EIP‑8141, called Frame Transactions, from “Considered for Inclusion” to “Scheduled for Inclusion” for the upcoming Hegotá upgrade slated for 2027. The change was announced during the August 27 All Core Developers Execution call.

What Frame Transactions do

Frames separate transaction authorization, gas payment, and execution into distinct, programmable steps. This allows an application or a separate account to cover the gas fee for a user, meaning users could send stablecoins or other tokens without holding ETH for gas.

Comparison with existing solutions

Current account‑abstraction solutions such as ERC‑4337 achieve similar functionality through a separate infrastructure (UserOperations, bundlers, paymasters) that operates outside the base protocol. Frame Transactions would embed this programmability directly into Ethereum’s native transaction flow.

Bundling related actions

The proposal enables multiple related operations—such as token approvals and trades—to be grouped into a single atomic transaction. If any step fails, all preceding actions can be reverted, preventing lingering approvals.

Programmable validation and key management

Frames allow accounts to define custom validation logic via EVM code. This opens the possibility for key rotation, alternative authentication methods, and future quantum‑resistant signatures without moving assets to a new address.

Roadmap context

Hegotá follows the Glamsterdam upgrade and will include other proposals such as EIP‑7805 (Fork‑choice enforced Inclusion Lists). Earlier discussions compared EIP‑8141 with competing approaches like EIP‑8130 to ensure compatibility across Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks.

While the specification remains a draft and cannot be used on mainnet today, developers are continuing implementation and testing ahead of the planned 2027 deployment.
