Ethereum Institutional backs Ethlabs proposal to shorten block times

The non-profit signaled support for reducing Ethereum block times, citing increasing institutional activity moving onto the smart-contract network.

Ethereum Institutional, a non‑profit organization, announced its support for Ethlabs’ motion to reduce Ethereum’s block time from 12 seconds to 10 seconds. The backing reflects growing institutional activity on the Ethereum network.

Proposal details

The motion references EIP‑8198, also known as “Quick Slots,” which aims to shorten block intervals to improve transaction throughput. Ethlabs said it is merging the proposal’s specifications into the main codebase and assessing downstream dependencies to align with the upcoming Hegotá upgrade.

Context within the ecosystem

Other blockchain projects are pursuing similar speed enhancements. Zcash token holders recently voted to cut the network’s target block time to 25 seconds, down from 75 seconds. Solana has also adjusted its slot time, moving from 400 ms to 350 ms and planning a further reduction to 200 ms.

Future outlook

The Hegotá upgrade, slated for potential implementation in late 2026, is expected to incorporate the faster block time if the proposal is accepted. The upgrade is positioned as a major step toward scaling and hardening the Ethereum mainnet.
