S&P Global expands into smart‑contract security with OpenZeppelin acquisition
S&P Global announced the purchase of smart‑contract security firm OpenZeppelin, adding on‑chain risk assessment to its digital‑asset services and complementing recent investments in crypto‑data provider Kaiko.

S&P Global disclosed that it will acquire OpenZeppelin, a leading smart‑contract security company. OpenZeppelin will keep its brand and operate as a separate unit, with CEO Demian Brener reporting to S&P Global Ratings President Yann Le Pallec. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Strategic fit
The deal gives S&P direct exposure to the security layer behind stablecoins, tokenized funds and decentralized‑finance (DeFi) applications. OpenZeppelin’s open‑source contracts have supported more than $37 trillion in transferred value, and the firm has completed over 900 security engagements, identifying more than 10,000 vulnerabilities before production.
Expanding on‑chain risk services
S&P said the acquisition will broaden its “on‑chain technology‑risk layer,” adding security assessments and benchmarks for digital assets to its existing financial‑risk toolkit. This complements S&P’s work on stablecoin stability assessments, DeFi protocol credit ratings, and tokenized‑product licensing.
Recent related moves
Three days earlier, S&P Global led a strategic investment in crypto‑data provider Kaiko, extending Kaiko’s Series B funding to $110 million. Kaiko supplies market data to over 250 financial firms and connects to more than 150 exchanges, supporting 24/7 pricing, valuation and risk management.
S&P and Kaiko have also launched on‑chain benchmarks, including the S&P Kaiko Digital Asset Indices and the S&P Digital Markets 50 Index, which combine traditional equities with cryptocurrencies and use Chainlink for real‑time on‑chain pricing.
Implications for institutional markets
As more securities and funds migrate to blockchain infrastructure, institutions will need both traditional financial data and insight into the software that moves assets. S&P’s combined offerings—market data from Kaiko, benchmarks from its index business, and smart‑contract security from OpenZeppelin—aim to address the risk management needs of always‑on markets.
