Ripple Custody Goes Live with South Africa's Absa, Boosting XRP

South African banking group Absa has activated its new digital asset custody platform on September 21, using Ripple’s custody technology. The service, announced by Absa’s corporate and investment banking division, aims to provide a secure, regulated environment for institutional investors to store digital assets and manage private keys.

The offering was described as “a digital first for Africa, built to institutional standards.” Ripple confirmed that its custody solution underpins the platform, and the bank has directed interested institutional clients to a dedicated sales desk. Specifics on which assets will be supported, fee structures, or initial customers have not been disclosed.

Background of the partnership

Ripple and Absa first announced the collaboration on October 15, 2025, positioning Absa as Ripple’s inaugural major custody partner on the continent. After an eleven‑month development period, the service went live, reflecting the typical timeline for large financial institutions to integrate key management, audit, insurance and regulatory compliance processes.

Why South Africa now?

South Africa’s regulatory environment has been evolving. By March 31, 2026, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) had approved 310 of 533 applications for crypto‑asset service provider licenses. Recent guidance from the South African Reserve Bank and other regulators clarified the status of crypto assets for domestic payments, while a high court ruling classified bitcoin as money under exchange‑control rules. A market survey indicated that roughly 13% of South Africans (about 7.8 million people) hold crypto, primarily through local exchanges, highlighting a demand gap that banks like Absa aim to fill.

Ripple’s broader custody expansion

Absa joins a growing roster of institutions using Ripple Custody. Earlier in the year, Ripple integrated Securosys hardware security modules and partnered with Figment for staking services, extending its custody capabilities to over 1,000 institutional clients. Ripple reports holding more than 60 regulatory licenses and registrations worldwide.
