Institutions May Increase Crypto Exposure After Ethereum's Q3 Performance, Says Tom Lee

BitMine Immersion Technologies chairman Tom Lee expects institutions to buy crypto after a strong quarter so far. The firm holds 5.9 million Ethereum (ETH) tokens that sit far below their purchase cost. The company valued its combined crypto, cash, and equity holdings at $15.7 billion on September 7.

BitMine Immersion Technologies chairman Tom Lee highlighted Ethereum’s outperformance in the first nine months of 2023 and suggested that the trend could encourage institutional investors to increase their crypto allocations.

Ethereum Leads Macro Asset Performance

In BitMine’s weekly update, Lee noted that Ethereum (ETH) has been the best‑performing macro asset this quarter, outpacing the S&P 500 by 5,430 basis points through the most recent Friday. Since June 30, ETH, Bitcoin (BTC) and Solana (SOL) have ranked as the top three assets.

Institutional Buying Outlook

Lee linked the strong performance directly to institutional demand, stating that the substantial outperformance of crypto versus other macro assets “sets the stage for institutions to add to their crypto holdings” in calendar Q3.

BitMine’s Current Position

  • BitMine holds 5.9 million ETH, a level that brings the firm close to a 5 % share of total ETH supply.
  • The firm’s combined crypto, cash and equity holdings were valued at $15.7 billion on September 7.
  • CryptoQuant data estimate unrealized losses on the ETH position at roughly $5 billion.

Recent Acquisitions and Staking Strategy

BitMine purchased 28,086 ETH in the past week, raising its total holdings to the current level. To mitigate price risk, the company has staked over 5 million ETH—about 85 % of its holdings. Lee projected annualized staking revenue of $330 million, rising to $386 million at scale, based on a 7‑day yield of 2.61 %.

Equity Performance and Future Targets

The firm’s stock, BMNR, gained 99 % quarter‑to‑date, ranking fourth in the Russell 1000 index. BitMine estimates it needs roughly 171,000 additional ETH to reach a 5 % supply share, which, at the current acquisition rate, would take about six weeks.
