Tim Draper Urges Apple and Meta to Add Bitcoin to Their Treasury Reserves

Venture capitalist Tim Draper argues that Apple and Meta should hold Bitcoin as a hedge against potential monetary instability, citing the companies' large cash balances and recent shareholder rejections of Bitcoin proposals at Microsoft and Meta.

Billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper told Bitcoin Magazine that Apple and Meta should keep a portion of their cash reserves in Bitcoin. He said the lack of any Bitcoin exposure creates financial risk for large technology firms, especially given U.S. fiscal trends that could affect cash and banks.

Current Cash Holdings

Apple’s most recent Form 10‑Q shows $39.54 billion in cash and cash equivalents, $22.86 billion in current marketable securities and $84.12 billion in non‑current marketable securities – a total of roughly $146.5 billion. The filing lists only cash, money‑market funds, U.S. Treasury and other conventional securities; there is no reference to Bitcoin.

Meta reported $15.46 billion in cash and cash equivalents and $74.80 billion in marketable securities, totaling about $90.3 billion. Like Apple, Meta’s filing mentions only traditional assets and does not disclose any Bitcoin holdings.

Shareholder Rejections of Bitcoin Proposals

Both Meta and Microsoft have faced shareholder proposals to assess Bitcoin as a treasury asset. Meta’s 2025 proposal was rejected, with 3,916,871 votes in favor and 4,980,828,562 against. Microsoft’s 2024 proposal received only 0.55 % support (28.23 million votes for, over 5.14 billion against).

Draper’s Rationale

Draper argues that corporations should keep roughly four weeks of operating expenses in Bitcoin, while individuals might hold six months of expenses. He warns that banks holding corporate cash could fail, and Bitcoin offers an asset outside the traditional banking system.

He also links the recommendation to broader fiscal concerns: a $167 billion federal deficit in August and a cumulative deficit of about $2 trillion for fiscal 2026, which he says could lead to hyperinflation or high interest rates.

Price Target and Outlook

Draper reiterated his long‑standing Bitcoin price target of $250,000, tying it to future halvings and reduced supply. He emphasized that his comments reflect personal investment views, not any policy change at Apple or Meta.
