Swedish tax authority orders six crypto firms to pay SEK 540 million in additional taxes

Sweden’s tax agency, Skatteverket, has issued tax assessments totaling almost SEK 540 million ($56 million) against six cryptocurrency‑related companies based in the northern city of Boden. The agency says the firms concealed crypto‑mining activities to claim tax advantages that would not have been available if they had been classified as miners.

Scope of the tax review

Between 2024 and 2026, nine crypto companies received tax adjustments exceeding SEK 500 million. Six of those companies operate in Boden, a region that has attracted miners for its abundant power and data‑center infrastructure.

Authorities’ findings

Patrik Lillqvist, head of intelligence at Skatteverket, explained that the inspected firms often used “special arrangements” to hide mining operations and secure tax benefits. The agency argues that the structures employed gave the companies advantages they were not entitled to under Swedish tax law.

Legal challenges

Several firms have contested the assessments in court. Administrative courts have so far upheld the tax authority’s position, and the case of Bikupan Datacenter has been taken to Sweden’s Supreme Administrative Court.

Company responses

Bikupan Datacenter, linked to HIVE Digital Technologies, argues that its Swedish entities provided only computing capacity to external mining pools and that the operations should be treated as AI‑related services rather than mining. HIVE has been repurposing its Boden facility for high‑performance computing and artificial‑intelligence workloads.

Background on Boden’s crypto sector

The city has been a hub for crypto mining since at least 2018, when around ten miners were already operating there. In 2023, Sweden removed electricity tax relief for data centres, affecting energy‑intensive Bitcoin miners and prompting closer scrutiny of the sector’s tax treatment.
