Summer Mersinger will step down as chief executive on October 16. She will continue to serve as an adviser to the organization through the end of 2026 to support the transition. The following day, October 17, founding leader Kristin Smith will assume the role of interim CEO while the association conducts a search for a permanent successor.

Background on the Leaders

Kristin Smith was the organization’s first employee when it launched in 2018 and served as chief executive until 2025, expanding its lobbying and policy presence in Washington. She also holds the position of president at the Solana Policy Institute.

Summer Mersinger took over the CEO role in June 2025 after a tenure as a commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Her period in charge coincided with rapid developments in U.S. digital‑asset policy, including new stablecoin legislation and detailed guidance from federal regulators.

Regulatory Context

The leadership change occurs amid an unusually active phase for U.S. digital‑asset legislation and regulation.
