What is the Bitcoin halving?

Bitcoin's code halves the number of new coins paid to miners every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years. It will continue until the reward becomes too small to divide, around the year 2140, capping supply at 21 million BTC.

Halvings reduce the flow of new supply and cut miners' revenue per block. Past halvings came before large price moves, but the timing and size of those moves varied and are not guaranteed to repeat.
