How Ethereum gas works
Every transaction pays a base fee, which is burned, plus a priority tip to validators. The base fee rises when blocks are more than half full and falls when they are emptier. Layer 2 networks such as Arbitrum, Base and Optimism usually cost a fraction of mainnet fees.
