Cardano's CIP-0113 programmable token standard is live on mainnet as of October 7 2026. The standard lets issuers of regulated assets including stablecoins, tokenized funds and bonds add optional rules such as KYC checks, transfer limits, freeze and seizure functions to their native tokens. The upgrade required no hard fork, using existing Cardano network capabilities. The Cardano ledger validates chosen rules on every token transfer, mint or burn. Only tokens issuers opt into the standard carry these new restrictions.

Key points

  1. The standard lets regulated asset issuers add optional freeze, seizure and KYC rules to their tokens
  2. CIP-0113 required no Cardano hard fork, using existing network capabilities
  3. Only tokens issuers opt into the standard carry the new programmable restrictions

Why it matters

The standard lets regulated asset issuers embed compliance rules directly into Cardano native tokens, eliminating reliance on off-chain enforcement. It also aligns with Fireblocks' planned March 2027 institutional custody support for Cardano-issued assets.
