The CFTC registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization on September 28, 2026. It is the first USDC-native clearinghouse for regulated US derivatives. The clearinghouse uses USDC for settlement and collateral, and can clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps, but not leveraged products. Coinbase now has end-to-end regulated derivatives infrastructure, joining Kraken which brought US derivatives infrastructure in-house earlier in 2026.

Key points

  1. It is the first USDC-native clearinghouse for regulated US derivatives.
  2. The clearinghouse uses USDC for settlement and collateral for eligible derivatives products.
  3. It can clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps, not leveraged products.

Why it matters

The approval lets Coinbase offer vertically integrated regulated derivatives services with USDC settlement. It also creates a new productive use case for USDC, increasing stablecoin utility.
